i've had my motorcycle for about two months now. (in other news, i bought a motorcycle. more on this at 11.) here is a collection of thoughts about the motorcycle and riding that i've gathered so far:

i really, really hate it when services that require a username and password do some sort of decency check on the username you try to pick. i generally try to use some combination of bits of my first, middle, and last name for usernames, which means usernames most generally end up containing the string "nigga". this, apparently, is a major affront to many companies. the situation generally plays out like this: i find a service i'm interested in and start the registration process, during the registration process i'm asked to pick a username, and then when i'm done filling out the form and hit submit i get an error that says that the username i chose is not available. ok, while i find it odd that any username made up of bits of my first, middle, and last name is taken, i try again with some other permutation. again, the username is unavailable. this cycle repeats two or three more times until i'm convinced they just think my last name is a dirty word. the first time i ran into this problem that i can remember was registering for aol when i was in 9th grade. later on, google implemented the same policy for gmail. last week i found that windows live also is disgusted by my last name. now, i sort of understand when free services, especially socially-centered services, like aol, gmail, and windows live do this. they don't want some wannabe thugs picking offensive usernames and then harassing people. it's annoying, but i sort of understand. what i don't understand, though, is what happened to me today. i just recently switched from comcast to at&t for home phone and internet access, so today i was signing up for online account management with at&t and they pulled the same stunt. this is not an account that is used for anything but managing my home phone service. it's not used for an email address, message board, online gaming, or anything else that would cause it to be seen by anyone but me and possibly some folks at at&t, so i'm not sure what the fuss is about. but, at least they had the decency to actually say why my chosen username was being rejected instead of just saying it is unavailable. post a comment | view comments (0) |

i had an epiphany the other day: apple and anheuser-busch are a whole lot alike. the business model for both is simply to find a solid product that appeals mainly to a niche audience, water it down so that it is acceptable to the general public, and then market the ever-living crap out of it. really, deep down, apple is not a consumer electronics company and anheuser-busch is not a beer company; they are both simply marketing companies who exist solely to sell as much of whatever as possible.

dec 20 to help my moving efforts, i temporarily swap cars with my dad. i drive his big pickup truck and he is on vacation from work so my car sits in his driveway. we plan on swapping back when i come down to visit for christmas on dec 30. dec 28 i get a phone call from my dad around mid-day. "hey kris, your brother took your car to work this morning because it was icy out and he is uncomfortable driving his new trans am in such conditions. well, on the way home for lunch he slipped off the road and rolled it." dec 30 i do the final walk-through and checkout for my apartment, and then i head to my parents. my insurance company has sent an adjuster to look at my car. initial reports look good. they say that while there is a lot of sheet metal damage, it appears to be minor enough that there shouldn't be anything seriously damaged underneath. they think they can probably fix the external damage and give it back to me. jan 3 i head back home in my mother's minivan. jan 6 the body shop has found more damage which has pushed the car past the possibility of repair. the insurance company totals my car. jan 7 - 20 i car shop. i narrow it down to a 2006 malibu ss maxx and a 2004 grand am gt1. i decide that i can afford the grand am much better than the malibu and schedule pickup of the car for jan 23. jan 23 i map out a public transportation route to the used car dealership that has the grand am: taxi from home to train station, train from my town to chicago, el from one chicago train station to another, train from chicago to the town where the dealer is, and another taxi from the train station to the dealer. but before i buy the car, i figure it's probably a good idea to pick up a new driver's license with my corrected address. i have already changed the address in the state's computer through a web interface they have, but still have the old address on my license. i head to the dmv just down the street and have to wait nearly 1.5 hours for them to print a new card. because of the crazy, unanticipated wait at the dmv, i end up missing the first train. the next train is in two hours so i reschedule the taxi. when the time comes the taxi arrives and takes me to the train station. i try to pay with debit card. "the card is declined." "what?" "it's declinded. it's got no cash." "that's not possible. here try this credit card." "also declined." "again, not possible." so i have to run to an atm to get cash for the cabbie. on the train ride in i call my bank and ask them why my card was declined. they see no declined transactions in their logs for my accounts, so i'm guessing my cabbie was just scamming me. i finally get to the dealer and do all the paperwork and pick up my new-to-me grand am. on the way home i stop at a store to pick up some things, but afterwards my car won't start. when i turn the key the lights dim and the starter clicks. so, i call aaa and wait an hour for them to come out and jump me. they do, and then i realize i have so little gas that i probably ought to fill up before i try to go any farther, so the aaa guy follows me to the gas station to jump me again after i fill up. once that's all taken care of, i head to a national tire and battery that is near my house and have them check out the car. looks like just a dead battery and nothing else, so i get that replaced. the car seems to be ok now, but i don't think having to take the car to the shop in the time between i buy it and i get it home for the first time is a good sign. post a comment | view comments (1) |

on friday a seller and i were able to come to an agreement on the price of a townhouse. lawyers are currently reviewing the agreement and i need to arrange for an inspection for some time this week. if all goes well, we should be able to close by the end of november. timing hasn't been so good, though. i have to be in florida this week for work. i'm waiting in o'hare while i type this, in fact. post a comment | view comments (0) |

if you see this, the switch to my new webhosting provider is complete! i finally reached the last straw with siteflip, my webhost of six years. their customer service was horrible. while things were running correctly everything was fine, but any time i had to talk to customer service they were slow to respond and i was treated like an idiot. i had enough earlier this week when they suspended my account because they tried to charge an expired credit card, the information for which i updated a month ago, and upon failure never contacted me to see what was going on. i had more helpful communication with my new webhost, inmotion hosting, in the first two hours with them that i ever had in six years with siteflip.

haha. i offered 85.3% of asking on the place i posted about yesterday. the place is decked out in '70s decor (in dire need of updating) and other places around it have been selling at even less than i offered. i heard back from my realtor this morning. she said the seller was "extremely insulted" and wouldn't even respond with a counter. i responded by upping my offer to 88.3% of asking. he responded by telling me he wouldn't even consider less than 94% of what he was asking. i told him to let me know when he wises up. buying real estate == fun times post a comment | view comments (0) |

i hate paying rent. actually, hate isn't a strong enough word. every time i write my rent check i know i'm throwing a large chunk of money away never to be seen again. as such, i've been looking for condos and townhouses to buy. my current lease is up at the end of december, and the deadline for the awesome $8000 first-time homebuyer tax credit is the last day in november. i'm really hoping i'll be able to buy something about mid-november. that'll qualify me for the tax credit and leave me with a good bit of time to move, yet minimize any overlap of rent and mortgage payments. unfortunately, i've only been able to save any significant amount of money since i took the new job about 7 months ago. before then, i simply didn't make enough to allow for serious saving. consequently, getting enough for a down-payment in time is really going to a challenge. i have a good start, but maybe not good enough. post a comment | view comments (0) |

man, if i had only one motivation to get a pilot's license, it'd be so that i could be up in the air the night of the fourth of july. i have a suspicion that the fireworks are unbelievable from above. speaking of fireworks, i think that most people forget the significance of fireworks when it comes to independence day. i think most people think that fireworks are just a pretty way to celebrate the fourth, but it is much deeper. fireworks are a beautified representation of artillery, of gunfire, of war. our national anthem, the star-spangled banner, mentions "the rockets' red glare" and "bombs bursting in air". it is this warfare that is remembered with fireworks on the fourth of july. it is to remind us that, though clichéd, freedom isn't free; that many men died in war earning and protecting our freedom. to all the men and women who have taken it upon themselves to keep our country and its interests safe, thank you. post a comment | view comments (0) |

gah. i had power issues today which i think fried the power brick for my pix. my voltmeter shows 0 volts on all output pins. serves me right for not having it plugged into ups. because the pix isn't working, metatron has no internet access, so it's shut down. it's getting warmer and warmer out now-a-days, so i think metatron will probably be off more often than not from now until the weather starts to cool down again.

throughout this guide, you will see the term system administrator. the system administrator is someone who manages your system, taking care of such tasks as adding peripheral devices, adding new users, and doing system backups. in general, this person (who may also be called the system operator or the "superuser") is the one to go to with questions about implementing your software. you may find it helpful to take along cookies or other snack food when visiting your system administrator.from the using hp-ux manual published by hewlett packard in september 1997. post a comment | view comments (0) |

somehow, i've become a bit of a grammar nazi (i probably inherited it from my mother). my pet peeve grammar faux pas is using adjectives where adverbs are required. for example, if someone asks you how you did on a test, the correct answer is "i did well", not "i did good". "good" is an adjective; that is, it describes nouns. "well" is an adverb. adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. in the example case, you want to describe the verb "did", so an adverb is appropriate. now, normally i have the willpower required to keep my mouth shut when somebody makes this mistake when speaking, but i get really agitated when i hear this mistake in scripted speech. tonight, as i'm unwinding watching some tv, an outback steakhouse commercial comes on urging the viewing public to "live adventurous". holy crap. not only is that a perfect example of using an adjective incorrectly, it doesn't even sound right! i understand that some incorrect usages sound as natural as, if not more natural than, the correct usages, but this certainly isn't one of those cases. outback and their marketing company should be embarrassed by this egregious bastardization of the english language. post a comment | view comments (0) |

i've not had a good method of collecting technical notes in the past. all of my notes are spread over a bunch of different machines in all sorts of different formats, which makes it very hard to make the notes useful. to try to consolidate everything into one central, searchable format, i've set up a personal knowledge base. it's hosted on metatron out of my apartment, which means, among other things, that it probably won't have the greatest uptime value in the world (especially in the warmer months when i don't feel like paying to both power and cool this beast of a computer) and upload speeds might not be so impressive. however, if i'm making it web-based, i might as well let the world know in case others find it helpful.

a few weeks ago the power flashed in my apartment while i had metatron running. this started getting me all paranoid because lately i've been setting up a bunch of virtual machines on metatron. now, if metatron goes down uncleanly, it's not just one os instance that can get messed up, it's a half dozen or so. to quell my paranoia, last weekend i bought three nice upses. well, wouldn't you know it... when i got home from work today my microwave clock was flashing 12:00, but metatron didn't even notice the power outtage. one point for paranoia!

i have my home network set up so that i can ssh in to metatron from the outside world, because sometimes that can be very handy. for example, maybe i'm at someone else's place and i want to get them a copy of a file i have at home. i can use sftp to get into metatron and grab it. or maybe i'm using an unsecure or otherwise untrusted internet connection and need to do something super sensitive (like checking my email!), with a little tweaking i can use an ssh tunnel as a socks proxy and route all of my traffic in an encrypted fashion back to my home internet connection. the downside to having ssh open to the internet, however, is that it gets probed by malicious-types almost constantly. on bad days my logs show up towards 2500 attacks. i take a number of precautions to help mitigate the security risk, such as disabling remote access for sensitive accounts (like root) and using strong passwords, but it still worried me to see all of those access attempts. but the other day, i ran into something pretty cool: sshblack. sshblack watches system logs and when a remote machine reaches a certain configurable threshold for too many failed login attempts, it will instruct my firewall to drop all packets coming from that particular source. no longer do crackers have virtually unlimited attempts to guess a correct account/password combination; after the first few failures they can't get as far as a login prompt anymore. post a comment | view comments (1) |

christmas was good, as was new year's. i had to work both the 24th and 26th, so i just stayed in my apartment for christmas day. i drove down to mom and dad's that friday and got to spend the weekend with the family, though. for new year's i went down to champaign-urbana to meet up with adam, max, and sam. abbie came up to visit last weekend. i took her to medieval times on saturday. i had a good time pointing out all of the things they have at medieval times that didn't exist in medieval times and then wondering why they wouldn't give us forks ("but they didn't have forks in medieval times!" yeah, i get it. they didn't have sound systems, computer-coordinated light shows, or fog machines, either!). but, we got to sit in the front row and the show was pretty cool and i think we both enjoyed ourselves. i ordered a nikon d60 this past week. it arrived yesterday, so i've been tinkering with it most of today. i can't wait for the weather to get nice so i can go outside and take pictures of stuff. post a comment | view comments (0) |

the trip out to see peter was quite an adventure. after getting the oil changed in my car, i left around noon on wednesday. not two hours into the trip and my "check engine soon" light comes on. i was getting pretty close to lafayette at that point, so i stopped at a shop there to have it looked at. i figured that i was about 100 miles into a 1,800 mile trip, so i'd probably rather be safe than sorry. they told me that my exhaust gas recirculation valve was stuck and needed to be replaced. two hours and $200 later, i was back on the road. i was trying to get to cincinnati by 6pm to have dinner with angie, but thanks to that stupid egr valve i was late. we still got to have dinner, but instead of going out we just ordered in. after supper i was back on the road. i had enough points for a free hotel stay racked up from the various business trips i have been on in the past year, so i ended the evening with a free stay at a hampton inn in winchester, ky. thanks, sallie mae! after breakfast the next morning i strapped myself into my car for the final nine hour leg of my trip. when i arrived in norfolk thursday evening, peter was at his ship's christmas party, which i briefly crashed. peter and i started the next morning with a trip to visit the uss wisconsin, a world war two era battleship that is inactive. we weren't allowed in the ship, but we were allowed on it. after the wisconsin, we found our way to the near-by douglas macarthur memorial. in the evening we toured naval amphibious base little creek, naval station norfolk, and inadvertently, fort story. while at naval station norfolk, i got to take tours of uss stout (ddg 55) and uss cole (ddg 67). saturday i was planning on making the whole trip back to chicago, but a late start, *cough*megettinglost*cough*, and traffic delays made this impossible. i stopped in newark, oh, shortly to see tom, but by dayton, oh, i was finding myself grumpy and fighting to stay awake so i stopped at a motel for a few hours of sleep. on sunday i made it back to chicago with a stop at my parents' for a nap and lunch. the trip was long and the drive was tiring, but it was a lot of fun. pictures. post a comment | view comments (0) |

i'm in class this week: rh436 red hat enterprise clustering and storage management. this is a class targeted towards rhces and above, so everyone in the class is a pretty hard-core linux nerd. yesterday we got into a discussion about using a couple of closed-source, commercial software packages versus using the cludgy, open-source alternatives that come with red hat. arguements were made that using closed-source kernel modules "taint" the kernel, an assertion that is also made by the kernel when it loads such modules. i think this is stupid. i'm not such a free software idealogue that i'm against using proprietary software when it makes sense to do so. i want to use the best solution for a problem, despite the philosophy on software licensing to which its creator subscribes. i'm wearing a microsoft shirt today in an attempt to further inspire controversy while i'm on nerdy issues, i switched metatron over from using raw disk partitions to using lvm the other night. this involved a lot of shuffling of data, boot process reconfiguration, and nervousness. i was quite surprised that i never seriously screwed anything up and the conversion was a success after only the first attempt. overall, i'm pleased with my performance. :) post a comment | view comments (5) |

this has been a pretty exciting weekend. adam rusch had an extra ticket to the cubs vs. nationals game on friday, so i went with him and a group from the place he works. we had great seats in the center-left bleachers. we did get rained on for maybe an hour between batting practice and the game, but otherwise the weather was great. i even got a sun burn! after the game, one of adam's bosses took adam, myself, and another of adam's coworkers out to supper at harry caray's steakhouse. on saturday, i met jake in merrillville to see jim gaffigan. we were to the left of the stage (stage left) and three rows back, so the seats were great. they didn't allow photography once the show started, but i got some shots beforehand to illustrate how supremely awesome the seats were, mainly to tease abbie (who was supposed to go). post a comment | view comments (0) |

why do a lot of hotels have extremely bright flood lights in their bathrooms? are they tanning lights? are they so you can see yourself really well when you are sitting on the john looking at yourself in the mirror? why are they on timers instead of normal light switches? and why do you always have to turn the knob on the timer past "here" for the light to come on, even though the timer will tick back to zero if you don't make it past "here"?

i'm sitting here in quizno's waiting for my new car to get fixed, and i'm kind of steamed at gm's certified used car program. i bought my new used 2004 grand am at the end of april, just shy of three months ago, and apparently just over 3,000 miles ago. i say apparently because about a week and a half ago the red warning light labeled "brake" came on and hasn't gone off since. today was the first day i had time to take the car in to have it looked at, so i woke up early (for a saturday) and took it to the local gm goodwrench service shop. upon inspection, i was told that the front left brake has been leaking brake fluid and warning light was telling me i'm low. to repair it will be about $350 and i'm just a couple of hundred miles over the certified used car warranty limit. grrrr... post a comment | view comments (0) |

i think it's time for a new car. the wagon wouldn't start this morning. i'm guessing the battery is dead, but the car was starting fine yesterday. the battery didn't show any signs of being weak. i was so ticked off that i came straight back to my apartment and applied for a car loan. not a whole lot, but enough to get a decent used car. i guess i'll have aaa come out and see if they can get the wagon jumped, but even if they can, i'm getting really tired of the hassles. i'm very divided about getting rid of the wagon. on one hand, it's dying and is starting to be a real pain. on the other, i've been riding in it and driving it nearly my whole life. the car is 21 years old, so i had to have been 3 or 4 when we got it. it's also the car i mainly learned to drive in, and i've been driving it since i was 15 (even longer if you count up and down the driveway). it's the car that i took with me when i went away to vincennes, and then purdue. that car has seen a lot of firsts in my life, and has been a part of a lot of good memories. post a comment | view comments (0) |

last weekend found me back in indiana. i took friday off and drove down. i stopped in west lafayette for lunch, and then continuted to mom and dad's place. they didn't know i was coming. surprise! saturday i went to matt plomin's wedding reception in lafayette. the wedding was in the caribbean, or central america, or somewhere, so i didn't go to that. the reception was great, and ended up at the local irish pub. it was really nice seeing and catching up with some friends i haven't seen in a while. this past thursday jake and abbie came up. we all went out friday night. we started at ripley's for supper, where i was saddened to learn that they have changed their menu, making it more "refined" and and less what i was looking for. after that, we bounced around a bit and ended up at the signature room on the 95th floor of the john hancock building having way over-priced drinks. post a comment | view comments (0) |

the other unix guy's last day was yesterday. to prepare, i flew out to the location he was at near buffalo, new york, and shadowed him from the 11th through the 15th. it was my first time flying commercially since i flew down to see tom in florida in 2004. for the trip out, i flew out of kord on a small, 40-something seat crj direct to kbuf. the plane was surprisingly comfortable despite it's small size (plenty of leg room, yay!), and the flight was only 1 hour 15 minutes. i actually spent more time waiting in the airport than i did in the air. my time in new york was fairly unremarkable. i did get to meet a few new people and see a few people i haven't seen in a while, but most of the time i was just trying to get up to speed on the systems i am taking over. i also spent a lot of time filling out forms for the security clearances i'll be needing now. oh yeah, i'm applying for a couple security clearances, so if you get phone calls or visits from the government and they are asking about me, don't worry. i'm not in trouble! the flight home on friday was a little less convenient. to save money, i was booked on a two leg flight. i flew out of kbuf on an us airways airbus a319 for kphl. it was an hour and a half flight, but the cool part is that i got to upgrade to first class for $50. i love flying first class. i had a big, comfortable seat, more leg room than i knew what to do with, and a beer before we even took off. in fact, i had two full beers and some pretty fancy snacks before those lowly people in coach got their little plastic cup of soda and peanuts. you are just treated better in first class; not like cattle. in kphl i caught my next flight: a united 737 to kord. this flight was about 2 and a half hours long, so again i asked if i could upgrade to first class. the lady at the ticket counter told me that the upgrade would be $300. yeah, right! i guess the $50 upgrade is just a us airways thing. post a comment | view comments (0) |

about three weeks ago, the main unix admin at work left for another job, meaning that i am the unix/linux guy at work now (unix/linux will here forth be referred to as simply unix). there is another guy, but he lives and works in new york and the systems he works on and the systems i work on don't do a whole lot of overlapping. this development, while a little sudden and initially startling, is going to be a really good thing for my career. i'm really excited about all of the new stuff i'll be learning and doing. that being said, this doesn't come without drawbacks. being that there are only two people in our group that know unix, we are going off on our own pager rotation. so, i go from being on a four person rotation (on call every fourth week), to a two person rotation (on call every other week). and seeing how he knows the applications his systems run and i know the applications mine run, we really will have to rely on each other for anything but basic stuff.

thursday was pretty cool. emc reps were in the office. we just bought a bunch of stuff from them, so they came to do something with that. the great part about having vendors on site is that they are usually compelled to take the group out to lunch. this is great, because we normally go someplace fairly nice, and hey, it's one lunch i don't have to pay for. emc was feeling extra generous, however, and also took us out to dinner at gibson's steakhouse. i'm told that gibson's is in top three of chicago's steakhouses. the food was great, and was only made better by the fact that i don't get steak, or any nice food, very often now-a-days.

this new year has been a lot different than previous new years. this was the first that i've been in a time zone other than eastern standard. i started getting a bunch of text messages shortly after 11pm last night and wasn't sure what was going on until i realized that 2008 had come an hour earlier for most of the people i know than for me. had i been watching tv, it would have been weird seeing the ball drop before midnight. another strange thing for me was not watching the ball drop at all. i went to a small gathering hosted by a friend of chris anderson's wife. we were all too busy playing charades to watch. this was the first time in probably a dozen years that i haven't watched the ball drop. 2008 is also going to be my first full year as an "adult". this will be my first full year completely on my own, succeeding or failing completely on my own merit. this is also the first year since preschool i will not be at any point a full-time student. sure, i will most probably take a few technical or professional classes, but i will not be enrolled in any school. i guess you have to grow up at some point, right? post a comment | view comments (0) |

my car broke on sunday. i was on my way to get gas and groceries after church when my clutch cable broke. i stepped on the pedal to shift and it didn't come back up. i had it towed to a shop, but being sunday they weren't open. i left my keys and contact information and the tow truck driver was nice enough to give me a ride back to my apartment. i wanted to tip him, but i had no cash. i didn't get the car back until this evening, so monday, tuesday, and this morning i had to ride public transportation. one bus from near my place to blue line train. the train to another bus stop. then one more bus to work. the way home was basically the same deal, only backwards. public transportation doubled my commute time.

last night i went with some friends from work to our company's suite at the chicago blackhawks game. this was my second live hockey game. the game was pretty cool and it's always fun to pretend you are a big-shot sitting up in the executive suites at things like this. it's getting chilly outside, so instead of turning on the furnace, i've got metatron up and running. i'm kind of leery about keeping it running for any long periods of time, as i don't have a ups. when i first moved in the power here was kind of flaky, but it seems to have settled down. *fingers crossed* post a comment | view comments (0) |

i remembered the other thing i was going to write about last night! we had a fire alarm here in the apartment building sunday afternoon. i was just finishing making toast in my oven (because i don't have a toaster) when i heard a faint beeping coming from the corridor. the fact that it was so faint is probably not a good thing, but i digress. because my oven is dirty, it always makes a little bit of smoke when i do any cooking with it. so i'm thinking, "great. my making toast has caused the evacuation of the entire building.", as i'm walking down the fire escape. when i get outside i see smoke billowing out of the front of the building, which was kind of a relief, but now i'm hoping the sprinklers don't turn on. water and my computer toys don't mix. as i got closer to the front of the building, it became apparent that the smoke wasn't coming from the building, but from a few burning shrubs in front of the building. the fire alarm had sounded because the fresh air intake of the building had sucked in the smoke. we had to wait for the fire department to come, put out the fire, and reset the alarm before we could go back inside. talk about excitement, eh? during lunch today i got a call from the body shop people. my car is done and i'm going to go pick it up tomorrow at lunch. yay for repairs on the shaggin' wagon. post a comment | view comments (0) |

time for more crap i forgot to write about this morning. i took my car to the shop last week to get the rear bumper fixed. i've got to say, if i ever get hit again i want the driver to have geico. i took the car to a geico-affiliated shop and waiting for me there were three people: a geico adjuster, a body shop rep, and a guy from enterprise car rentals. i was in and out in half an hour with a 2007 dodge caliber rental that geico is picking up the tab on. the adjuster was pretty surprised that i actually wanted my 1987 chevy fixed, but didn't fight me on it. totaling the car was never mentioned. all things considered, it was a pretty good experience. man, i know i'm forgetting something. i hate getting old. post a comment | view comments (0) |

so, yeah… that redhat class was super elementary. i did pick up a few tips and tricks, but not enough to justify going. now i just need to convince the decision makers to let me go to the next two in the series. if you haven't heard, amazon.com has started selling drm-free, 256kbps mp3s to compete with apple's itunes. the reason this is noteworthy is that amazon is the first major store to sell uncrippled, universally supported, high quality digital music files. i had never bought music files from any online service solely due to the fact that up until now, virtually everything had been either crippled with drm making it extremely unfriendly to use, or low quality. or both. now that amazon has provided a great, legal alternative to the digital retail crapshoot that the market has been, i will certainly continue to use them. post a comment | view comments (0) |

the last couple of days at work have been a lot of fun. i've been working on a "high visibility" project. myself and three other guys have been working on setting up a test server for an application that we will probably be moving to in the near future. the thing of it is, though, is that it's a san-attached linux box. of the guys i'm working with, one knows linux very well, one knows hp-ux very well, and all three know sans at least a whole lot better than i do. i've learned more in these past three days than i learned in a whole semester of college. and it's all really cool stuff, too. today, once we finally had everything squared away, i went into our data center and watched the server's monitor while unplugging one of the redundant fiber connections to it. the os mentioned that it noticed that one of the physical links was down, but failed over to the other link seamlessly and kept on chugging. how cool is that? next week i'm back in downtown chicago for redhat training. i was scheduled for the beginning class, even though i tested into the intermediate class using redhat's placement tool. no matter, it's probably not a bad idea i start at the beginning. all of my knowledge thus far has been gained because i had a specific problem or goal. there have been a lot of things that i haven't really had to deal with because it's usually just me using the machine, such as user account management. this will catch me up on some of the stuff i've never had the need to learn in the past. post a comment | view comments (0) |

a couple of interesting things happened to me today. first, i woke up this morning to a strange sound. trains go by my building quite regularly, so that plus the fact that i lived in vincennes for two years means that i am pretty used to hearing trains come and go. the sound i heared this morning had much more of a "chug-a-chug-a-chug" quality to it and the sound of the whistle was very different than what i'm used to hearing. wondering what was going on, i stuck my head out of my windows and saw what appeared to be a steam engine going by. the other thing happened on my way back home from church and grocery shopping this afternoon. as i was coming into the building with my groceries, two other people were leaving together; a short, chubby, middled-aged, balding, white guy wearing jeans and a t-shirt, and a tall, young, fairly attractive, black woman wearing hooker boots and not much more than her underwear. i can't imagine how those two knew each other. post a comment | view comments (0) |

again i find myself neglecting my website. today was my first day back in the office in nine days. last week i was attending a commvault training class. commvault is the backup solution my company has been using for some time now. within the week i will be taking an exam to become a commvault certified engineer. the irony of it is that our company probably will be transitioning off of commvault in the near future, thus making my training and certification pretty much worthless. oh well. at least i was out of the office and hanging out in downtown chicago for a week. this past week also saw me turn 24, my last year before i am officially old. anderson and his wife, sarah, came over saturday night with a cake to play wii and celebrate. if no one else, i had a good time. this morning my return was greeted with new-found remote access to work. i guess they are getting ready to put me in the pager schedule. that sucks, but was expected. now i am watching "scent of a woman" on tv. i had never seen it before, but am quite pleased with it so far. it might be a movie i should get on dvd. post a comment | view comments (0) |

i made two exciting, quality of life enhancing purchases today. the first is a new no-stick 10" skillet. why is this worth noting? well, my old 10" skillet is made of thin aluminum and isn't anything close to no-stick. the bottom had warped making it very wobbly and created hot and cold spots. also, no matter how i fiddled with cooking temperature or how much no-stick spray i used, i could never prevent food from sticking. frying eggs was a disaster because the white would glue itself to the pan and then burn. to break the new pan in tonight, i made fried eggs. they came out perfect. the other purchase is a nintendo wii. i've been wanting one for a while now, and just happened to stumble upon one (five, actually) while i was at target shopping for the skillet. not being one to pass up such opportunities, i bought it along with "wii play" which gets me more games and another controller. it was probably a little more than i should have spent, but i figure that this will be my birthday present to myself. what? you didn't realize that my birthday is next week? you'd best go shopping tomorrow, don't you think? post a comment | view comments (0) |

this past weekend was fairly eventful. anderson and i had planned on going out to check out the infamous rush street in chicago friday night, but adam stopped by on his way to wisconsin for a family reunion so all three of us went. adam met me at my apartment after work. after the grand tour we hopped on the metra and met anderson with some of his coworkers at union station. we had a couple of drinks at the bar there, but eventually found our way to the bar anderson and i usually go to for supper and more drinks. after we had finished our supper, it was time for rush street. we hopped in a cab and started out. we never quite made it to rush street, but found ourselves on division street instead. the bars there were very much like the bars at purdue where all of the frat boys hung out, so basically they kind of sucked. we didn't stick around for very long and soon left for dave & buster's. we played video games for a couple of hours and called it a night. i had to be at work at noon on saturday for our monthly server maintenance. that was all sorts of fun speaking of maintaining servers, we had a server completely die today. luckily it wasn't a production machine. despite having 24x7, 4 hour response service contracts with hp, it took them forever to get a technician out to fix it. that meant i had to stay late. very late. i didn't get home from work today until about 10:30pm. and he didn't even get the stupid thing fixed! post a comment | view comments (0) |

the past week and a half have been very busy. it all started on wednesday the 11th. due to the need to work on some electrical equipment, we had to stay late at work and shut down our server room, all 100+ servers. so that was fun. the electrical work that was done was to prepare for our move to a new data center. that project started at 2pm on friday the 13th. normal employees had the afternoon off and again for the second time that week we shutdown all of our servers. this time we had to uncable them, unrack them, carry them to another room, rerack them, recable them, and then start them up. on friday we worked until about midnight. saturday we were in at around 8am. i ended up leaving at around 2:30am sunday morning, but some people worked continuously through the night. i returned at about 9:00am sunday and worked until everything was done, which turned out to be about 9pm. as a sort of compensation, the company paid for an outing this past wednesday. first they got us tickets to the cubs game that afternoon. the seats were pretty decent: only ten rows back from the cubs bullpen. i made sure to have some old style, peanuts, and cracker jack, so i think i had a pretty complete cubs experience. at the game i happened to run into a bus driver who drives one of the routes i rode fairly frequently at purdue. small world, eh? after the game the company sent us to dave & buster's. the only way i can describe it is an adult chuck e. cheese. it is a decent restaurant, but also has a ton of arcade games. we spent a few hours there having supper and playing. the dave & busters we went to was downtown, but i found out there is one much closer to where i live. i might have to go there somewhat regularly. i had this past friday off, so i got to do some errands. i finally got my illinois driver's license. i stopped by fry's to pick up some stuff to get ready for the cable install that was scheduled for the next day. i also stopped by best buy looking for a wii, but walked out with a pair of speakers for my living room. as i said before, comcast was supposed to come saturday morning to hook up my cable. they did. they got here around 7:30am all ready to hook everything up. they talked with me for a little while and then went to look for the cable room. they came back and told me that the cable room was locked and that there was no way to get in because the building office was not yet open. i asked them why i wasn't told that i needed to make sure that this room was accessible when i called and asked if there was anything i needed to do to prepare. they didn't have an answer for that, but told me that i had to reschedule again. i told them to forget it and that i was calling at&t for dsl. well, at&t couldn't get here for another two weeks, so i called comcast back and am yet again rescheduled. post a comment | view comments (0) |

oops. i lied. "linksys" is back to its former, unsecured self. i think i know what's going on now and why my connection is so crappy. i think there are two "linksys" networks, one of which is secured and the other isn't. i normally get the best signal from the unsecured one, so that's what i've been seeing and using. the other day when the network all of a sudden went secured, the unsecured network must have been turned off leaving me only seeing the secured one. this might also explain frequent short service interruptions that i experience. nine more days until i have cable. *sigh* post a comment | view comments (0) |

yesterday was my introduction to the mass transit systems of the greater chicago area. first i rode the metra from bensenville to chicago's union station. the metra is the commuter rail line that hauls people between chicago and the suburbs. they use real diesel locomotives and are very similar (i'm told) to amtrak trains, except that metra doesn't have any long-haul routes. from union station i hopped a cta bus to the place i was going. later in the evening, i also had the opportunity to ride the subway/el for the very first time, too. the reason for all the traveling was because i went with chris and sarah and some of their friends to the taste of chicago. we figured that it wouldn't be too crowded as it was nearing the end of its 10-day run, but it was packed. despite the large number of food vendors, i wasn't too impressed with the selection. it seemed that there was a lot of redundancy as many of the places had plain old hamburgers, sausages, pizza, and stuff like that. i did find a place with an excellent rum battered tilapia and another place with key lime pie, so i was happy. afterwards we headed down to the south side and hung out in a bar on the university of chicago's campus. the bar had a great atmosphere as well as a respectable beer selection: 24 on tap and 100 in bottles. i ended up crashing at chris and sarah's place, but had to get back early this morning to meet the cable guy. so comcast is kind of screwing me. i had called last saturday to schedule a time to have my cable (tv, internet, and voip telephone) hooked up. i told the guy that i couldn't be around during the week for the installation, so it would have to be scheduled for the following saturday. he said that would be fine and told me the guy would be here between 8 and 10am. so today comes and i make sure that i'm here, up, and ready by 8am all excited that i'll finally have a decent internet connection. 10am comes and goes. then 12pm. at 1:30pm i finally get fed up and call comcast. they say that they had me scheduled for 8 to 10am on tuesday, july 10. i tell the lady on the phone that this is wrong and that i told them that it had to be today because i work during the week. she offered to reschedule the appointment for saturday the 14th, but that is the day of the big datacenter move at work, so i still couldn't be home for that. so, she told me that the only time she could schedule me would be the morning of saturday, july 21. great. so now i have to wait another two weeks before my cable gets hooked up. thanks, comcast. post a comment | view comments (2) |

happy independence day! i really didn't do too much to celebrate it, but i did get to watch a whole slew of fireworks shows from my balcony tonight. i tried to count how many individual shows i could see, but it was hard to keep an accurate count because some would die down for a little while and then spring back up again. if i had to guess, i'd say that i was able to watch about 15 different fireworks displays at the same time from the comfort of my balcony. the most impressive of which was the one i'm guessing was in schaumburg. schaumburg is kind of a rich town and it showed tonight. their display was very exciting and lasted for a long time. it's kind of sad that i didn't really get to do any fireworks of my own (besides the little bit i did in june before i moved here), but i suppose that watching other people set off tens of thousands of dollars of fireworks around me was good enough.

yesterday was the end of my second week at work. until yesterday morning i had no admin access to anything, so i was left with very, very little to do. i understand that they want to make sure that i'm trustworthy and situated enough before i am granted such rights, but it makes for a very boring time for me. i did get to set up a linux box the first week. it seems that i might be the most linux savvy person there, so that's cool. hopefully that will prove to be an asset in the future. today i had to get a few things squared away for my car. my indiana plates expire today, so i had to go get my title transfered and get new plates this morning. i was going to get a new license too, but i didn't have enough time. that's not such a big deal, though, and i have plenty of time to do that later. i also called comcast about getting cable service hooked up. it looks like they have a deal going where i can get "enhanced cable", cable internet, and voip all for $99 plus tax per month for one full year. if that pans out, i'm all over it. right now i only have the five tv channels i can pull out of the air, my cell phone, and a really jankity internet hookup. i'm borrowing my dad's laptop with a wireless card and getting free wifi from some nice person who hasn't locked down their wireless network. i then have the laptop plugged into my router and have internet connection sharing running. and then my workstation and metatron are plugged into the router. all-in-all, i think my internet connection is being nated three times (1: wifi router, 2: laptop's ics, 3: my router). if that ain't urban engineered, i don't know what is. post a comment | view comments (0) |

i'm moving to chicagoland tuesday. i was planning on renting a u-haul truck, but dad has offered his help and the use of the truck and stock trailer. i start work the following monday. this should allow me a few days to get acclimated to the area and figure out how to to get work and how long that trip will take. i am not sure what my take-home pay will be as i have no idea what my various paycheck withholdings are going to be, so it's been difficult to plan a budget. because of this, i'm not sure if/when i'll get any luxury services (cable/satellite tv, high speed internet, etc.) hooked up. because i'm not sure about my internet access situation and i'll probably be dropping to a fairly skimpy cell phone plan, there is a good chance that i'll be hard to get a hold of for a while. post a comment | view comments (0) |

monday i went up to chicago to look at apartments. i had it narrowed down to two yesterday and today i'm sending in my application, deposit, and all that jazz. the place to which i am applying is right close to kord, so that is going to rock. i'll get all sorts of use out of my scanner. today, my purdue diploma arrived in the mail. i suppose i ought to get it framed. i suppose i ought to find my vincennes diploma. post a comment | view comments (0) |

i got to go to the indy 500 yesterday. tim got two tickets to the at&t corporate suite and invited me to come with him. in case you were wondering, pictures were taken. yesterday morning, we parked in downtown indianapolis and met up with everyone else that was invited. at&t provided a continental breakfast and goodie bags for everyone. we then loaded up on coach buses and made our way to the indianapolis motor speedway with a police escort. yes, we legally stopped traffic and ran stops to get to the race. we were in one of the tower suites. it was right above the pits and had a great view. at&t had a catered buffet set up with prime rib, pork, caesar salad, pasta salad, roasted potatoes, and cheesecake. they also had a well stocked, open bar. most of the race was pretty good. the only thing that sucked about our suite was that it had no view of turn three: the turn where most of the wrecks happened. at lap 113 it started raining, so the race was stopped and delayed for about three hours. after the track was sufficiently dry, they got the cars back out and restarted the race. after about 50 more laps, the rain returned and the race was ended. the guy who ended up winning didn't deserve to win, i don't think. he got lucky and was in the right place when the rain came back. i think that if the race was fully run, tony kanaan would have won. there were quite a few important and famous people in our suite. the ceo of at&t made an appearance. the regional president of at&t was there for most of the race. a state representative was there. we met a couple that owned a small, rural phone company. jared fogle was even in our suite. post a comment | view comments (0) |

still no job yet. this past weekend i went to batesville for that meeting. while it was a lot of fun and i learned a lot, i don't think the trip will prove very productive. i was up in the chicago area for interviews tuesday and wednesday. i think both went fairly well. both said that i should hear back from them early next week. the company in evansville has recontacted me. they said that they might have been a little off on their offer. i am supposed to talk to them on the phone tomorrow morning to discuss a new offer. i'm interested to hear what they have to say. i've decided that i don't like recruiters. i've been contacted by various recruiters during this job search and so far working with them has been nothing but a waste of time. they have me jump through hoops by filling out paperwork and doing phone interviews with them, and yet they haven't gotten me one real interview yet. now, i know that they are paid by companies, not by job seekers, so their loyalties lie with them, but if they treat job seekers poorly they won't get very good results for their clients. eh… i'm just tired of being jerked around. post a comment | view comments (0) |

last week was super busy. monday, i moved back home from purdue. that was pretty much an all-day project. i had to lift metatron four times and i think i pulled a muscle in my back. tuesday, i drove to evansville for a job interview. on the way down, i stopped in vincennes to see if i could track down any of my former teachers. luckily, i found all of them together in a meeting. i visited with them a bit and filled them in on my story from vu until now. one of them suggested that i contact a guy about a job in hospital facilities management. apparently people with backgrounds in biomedical electronics have been getting into the field and he thought i might be able to, as well. the interview was for a voip technician job and went really well. after the interview i had dinner with brad graber, who i hadn't seen since the spring of 2003. i would have liked to stay longer, but i had a job interview in carmel the next morning so i had to leave pretty early. the interview wednesday was for a network integration company. they said that if i were hired i would start doing mainly phone tech support, but would be able to move up into a position with more of an engineering aspect after a while. they said that they'd get back to me in a few weeks. after that interview, i talked to a head-hunter in indianapolis. he said that he had a job in frankfort that i would be perfect for, but i haven't heard back from him. i should call him and see what's up. i called the contact i was given for the facilities manager job and was invited to batesville for a big meeting of hospital engineering folks. that is this coming weekend, so i'm planning on going down to that to network a bit. i also received a job offer from the company in evansville. wednesday evening, adam and i went and saw spiderman 3 in the imax theater on the south side of indy. thursday, i did absolutely nothing. i figured that i had been running pretty much nonstop for about 10 days straight, so i took the day off. friday, jake and i ran errands all over kokomo, including stopping by the hospital to visit abbie. she had minor surgery so we went to see her in recovery. saturday, jake and i went to carmel to get mom's mother's day gift. we got her a custom six-pack of fancy beer. yesterday, jake and i went back to west lafayette to pick up some stuff. i had planned on picking up office 2007 from purdue for cheap, but they had already removed me from the system. that is disappointing. yesterday evening, the family went to the new microbrewery/restaurant for my graduation celebration. this morning, after days of negotiation, i told the company in evansville that i would be unable to accept their offer. the pay rate they would be able to offer was just lower than i felt i could accept. they were offering less than what 1up! started me on despite that i now have a few years of experience and more college education. this afternoon i have two phone interviews. wish me luck! post a comment | view comments (2) |

i had my last final this morning, so i am done with school, at least for now. the last final was for japanese. i'm kind of nervous. this class is the only one that could threaten my graduation. keep your fingers crossed. i say that i'm done "at least for now" because i've been eyeballing a couple of mba programs that have it concentrations as possible future educational pursuits. i won't even seriously consider this for a few years, though. i still need to pay off some student loans and get a good job before i can think about getting a master's. even though i am done, my ra duties will keep me here until at least sunday afternoon. dad says he can bring the truck over and help me move monday afternoon, though, so i'm going to wait until then. i'm not in any big rush to get home and the university will let me hang out here for a little while. i have a job interview in carmel next wednesday. this is with the company that wanted me to drive up to grand rapids. i guess they would rather come to me instead of have me come to them. i'm fine with it either way. the community college said that they'd be making a decision "in the next few days" when i had my phone interview with them. it's been over a week, so maybe i ought to follow up with them. now i am tired and i want to take a nap. post a comment | view comments (0) |

this is in response to a comment left anonymously regarding potential employers reading my website. i was going to post my reply as a comment, but i think it would be better to post it on the main page. think of it as a disclaimer of sorts. these are valid points and i have considered them all a long time ago. the fact of the matter, though, is that collecting firearms is a perfectly legal thing to do. my ak is not automatic, but semi automatic. and even if it were automatic, it is still legal to own provided that you've paid the proper fees and have obtained the proper license. all of the pictures of myself with any of my firearms are pictures of safety and control. i wear hearing and eye protection at all times. i never shoot at living-creature shaped targets, but only at the round bulls-eye type. i don't even hunt, nor do i have any desire to do so. i am always shown (unless the photo is photoshopped) keeping my firearms pointed in a safe direction and observing all safety rules. i always obey all firearms laws. i keep my firearms (all of which are enumerated on this site, by the way) locked in a case when not in use. i am well aware of the stigma that can come with gun ownership and try to counter that by being a responsible gun owner. sure, some jokes might be made from time-to-time, but they are all light-hearted, (mostly) in good taste, and most importantly, just jokes. i would like to think that anyone who would come to my site to learn about me would take the time to read instead of just looking at the pictures. i have something like four years of journal entries that give, i think, great insight into my personality. i think my writing paints a picture of a nice, gentle, intelligent, conservative young man with a somewhat quirky sense of humor, a characterization that i think anyone who knows me will whole-heartedly agree with. so basically, if potential employers are going to come to my site and make quick, emotional judgments about me without doing their due diligence, then maybe i don't want to work for them. i'm not all that keen on the idea of working with people who make rash, reactionary decisions. if a potential employer comes to my website, looks at the pictures, reads and takes the time to make an informed decision and still doesn't like the fact that i'm politically conservative and a gun owner, then i certainly wouldn't want to work for them. our personalities would clash way too much to foster a pleasant working environment. post a comment | view comments (6) |

1up!'s competitor wants someone to start well before i could, so that's not going to work out. the technical services manager job at the local newspaper company has been filled. i talked with the community college today, so at least that's not dead yet. i also got a call today from a company in indy offering me $11/hr, and that was high because of my experience. i politely declined that. monday a network consulting company with an office in carmel asked if i could come to grand rapids for an interview. i told them that i could come after school was out and if they picked up the tab on travel expenses. an eight-hour round-trip car drive, after all, is a little more than i can afford right now. i haven't heard back from them. so now i'm back to sending out scores of resumes through various job websites. *sigh*

i went home saturday for mom's birthday. i got her a t-shirt that says "bad grammar makes me [sic]". it's pretty funny. tom allen was in town for a wedding, so i got to hang out with him a bit yesterday. he took erica and me out for breakfast, but afterwards i had to go back and do laundry that was a couple of days overdue. once i got that finished, i met back up with him, erica, and holsapple. tom showed us pictures from when he was overseas with the navy and later we all went putt-putting. i didn't lose this time! after that, tom took us out for supper and then i had to go back to work. i had my follow-up tb test this afternoon. the nurse did an incredible job taking blood in that i didn't feel a thing and i was even watching. it amazed me. the goodness ended there, because i bled like none other after she removed the needle. i'll take a little blood over painful needle sites any day. one of 1up!'s competitors called me today for a dns administrator position. it sounded like the job actually has very little to do with dns. they also said that they'd like to have the position filled by may 1, so i have no idea why they would be calling me. my resume pretty clearly says that i'll be graduating in may, not before may. i'll guess we'll see what happens with this. it's good, though, that i'm still getting hits from interested companies because the company in chicago that i've interviewed with twice sent me an email this afternoon telling me that they are hiring someone else and not me. i can not say that i'm not disappointed. post a comment | view comments (0) |

thursday night was the third annual rock the quad concert put on by wccr, cary club, and the underground concert committee. i really didn't want to have too much to do with getting the concert put together this year so that someone else could learn how it's done. i had no problem answering questions and pointing in the right direction, but i stayed out of the nitty gritty of it all together. i did end up helping a lot the day of the concert, however, because colin, the president of wccr, had class and couldn't be around all of the time. also, we got permission to use the old main office for the band green room. normal residents can't get the key to that area, so i had to stand around to let band members in. the concert itself went pretty well. i don't think it was advertised as well as it should have been, but oh well. we did have a bit of excitement this year that we didn't last year. we had to call the police to haul off a very, very drunk guy. he could barely stand and it was only a matter of time before he hurt himself or somebody else. towards the end of the show we started having problems with crowd surfing and moshing. at first i was rushing into the crowd to break things up and then retreating back to my post at the door of the green room, but eventually i just stayed in the middle of the crowd. people calmed down a lot with my big-ass self standing right there. i got an email while i was out helping with the concert asking me for a third and final interview up in chicago. that's all great and dandy, except that this process has taken so long that we've come upon dead week and finals week, meaning that i really don't have a lot of spare time i can burn by making a trip to chicago. i was really hoping to have a job lined up by now; but again, oh well. post a comment | view comments (1) |

yesterday i went back up to chicago for my second interview. it wasn't at all what i had expected. it turns out that this round of interviews was pretty much the same as the last round, except with different people. i have no more of an idea now than i did at this time yesterday if they are going to want to offer me the job. i did get to talk for a good length of time with a woman that i'd be working a lot with, provided that i were offered the job and i accepted. she seemed to be very open and honest about her experiences working there and how she felt about the company and her job. i very much appreciated that. sometimes it feels that the people i interview with try to be salesmen for their company when you start asking them questions. common sense, however, dictates that not everyone can be super happy about work everyday. having someone honestly lay out both what they like about working at the company and what they dislike is very refreshing. after the interview, i met up with chris anderson at his new job in chicago. he is the it guy for a bank. after i helped him fix a problem he was having, i met his bosses. i guess they knew that i had helped anderson with something, and one of them asked me if i wanted a job in new york. i thought he was joking, so i replied, "yeah, sure". he said that he wasn't joking at all and told me to send my resume to chris so that they could send it to some other guy. so that's interesting. after that, the bosses (one of whom, i believe, is the president of this particular bank) bought anderson and me supper at some little irish joint down the road. on top of all of this, i've also been talking with a couple of other companies about jobs. a newspaper holding company has a technical services manager position open in or near kokomo. i think that would be a pretty decent job opportunity. plus, i would think that my experience in dealing with newspaper companies would give me an edge as a candidate. the local community college in lafayette has a sysadmin job i've applied for, as well. living in lafayette would be great because it has a lot of the perks of a college town being that purdue is right across the river, but very few actual students, because they mostly live across the river. working in educational it would be great, too, because i doubt you could find a more low pressure environment. post a comment | view comments (0) |

hmmm... it seems that livejournal allows their members to post comments on my syndicated entries through their system. the rub is that all such comments stay on their system and there is no way to get them copied over to my system. further, if someone does comment through livejournal and i do happen to stumble upon it, i can not reply because i'm not an lj member. all that being said, it may be easier (maybe?) to just post any comments you may feel like posting directly to my website. i've recently made it much easier to post comments by removing that annoying security image that used to screw everybody up. now all the worst that can happen is that the comment gets delayed until i can approve it, and that's only if my website thinks the message looks fishy. or you can just post the comments on lj. just keep in mind that i will be unable to reply. post a comment | view comments (1) |

yesterday was very busy. a group from cary went on a tour of a surface coal mine just south of terre haute. i was up at 6:30am to get ready to leave at 8:00am. first we had to go through a mandatory safety briefing. the company gave us cool high-vis vests to use during the tour and even let us keep them. after the safety stuff we started the tour going backwards through the coal production process. we first got to watch how coal is processed and loaded into train cars to be sent off to customers. after that we drove out to the dragline excavator. they let us get in the dragline both while it was working and while it was walking. it's quite strange to be on a machine many times larger than a house while it is walking. after probably about an hour on the dragline, we drove down to the actual coal seam and watched a huge backhoe-looking machine digging out coal and loading it into 150-ton dump trucks. the only machine we were allowed on was the dragline due to the poor weather. it rained the entire time we were there, so all of the other big machines were wet, slippery, and generally unsafe to be playing on. we made it back to cary a little past 5:00pm. i had about twenty minutes of down time and then adam called. he was in town and wanted to go out for drinks and supper. we met a couple of other guys at the irish pub and hung out there for a while. we finished supper just in time to get back to campus for the bob saget show. bob saget was ok. his material was mediocre. he relied on the whole "omg danny tanner is cussing and otherwise speaking foully" thing way too much. i mean, that was funny, but it would have been much better if he had good jokes with the bad danny tanner gimmick on the side. his opening act, however, was very funny. i wouldn't mind going to see him as a headliner. after bob saget, adam and i met up with matt plomin and hung out with him until a little past 1:00am. i didn't get to sleep until at least 1:30am. it was a long day. post a comment | view comments (0) |

it looks like i'll be going back up to chicago next wednesday for a second interview. from what i understand, i'll be speaking with some more people in the area in which i would work, as well as some upper management including the owners. no pressure, eh? last night i went out with my sr. while we were out, he got a phone call from another ra in our building saying that bombs had gone off in the courtyard of cary quad and that police were everywhere. it turns out that they were just bottle bombs, probably of the drano variety, but people got arrested for it. i'm half disappointed we don't get to work with the police more often. i had grown very accustomed to it working at vu. adam rusch set up a livejournal syndication thingy for me. those of you with livejournal can now friend my rss feed. thanks adam! post a comment | view comments (0) |

i've changed the standard footer i use on this site so that any php page deemed safe (doesn't contain passwords and the like) will have a link to its actual php source. this way, if anyone gets to wondering how i got something to work they can check it out for themselves. hint: there are a few php scripts i use that don't include the standard footer (the random banner script on the home page, for example), but whose sources are still accessible. it shouldn't be rocket science figuring out how to view them. i must warn that my code probably isn't the best. i'm not a trained programmer in any way, shape, or form, so i have very little sense of style or "best practices". use what you find at your own risk.

i've got more phone interviews lined up. that's pretty exciting. i was really worried that people would instantly discard my application when seeing that my bachelor's is in psychology, but it doesn't seem like that is happening. i'm really happy about that. the company in downtown chicago wants to bring me back for a second face-to-face interview. that's awesome. if nothing else, it's leverage for negotiations with other companies. but i think this company is pretty cool and am excited at the idea of working for them, so i hope it works out. i went out with a couple of guys from cary tonight for beers and to watch the ncaa men's basketball championship game. it was nice to be able to go out. most of my normal hangout buddies have graduated and moved away, leaving me with no one to hang out with. this gave me a good break from the monotony of staying in all of the time. post a comment | view comments (0) |

busy, busy, busy. wednesday i had a phone interview with a company out of elk grove village, il. they sent me a "thanks, but no" email yesterday. it was kind of funny; i was checking my website stats yesterday morning and noticed that people inside this company had spent a lot of time, and a lot of my bandwidth, scouring my website. i wonder what they were looking for, or what they found. no matter, yesterday i also drove up to chicago for a real, live interview with the company downtown. i think it went fairly well. i interviewed with three different groups of people, so i guess they'll get together, compare notes, and decide if they want to have me back for a second interview. after the interview, i met up with kelly, saw her new place, and had supper with her. i have phone interview with yet another company in the chicago area this afternoon. for a change of pace, i guess, i have a phone interview with a company out of indianapolis next tuesday.

i had the phone interview that i posted about this afternoon. it went really well and they invited me up to their office in chicago to have a face-to-face interview and meet people. the office is located on the 41st floor of a 50-story building right downtown in chicago, just a few blocks away from the sears tower. it sounds like a great opportunity and i'm pretty psyched at the idea of living and working in a big city. another company in indianapolis called me today, as well, and we had an impromptu phone interview. this company seems super small with very little room for advancement. i'll probably go and interview with them if they ask, but i'm pretty sure i'd take the chicago job over it. i had also applied to a newspaper group hoping that my experience in that field would help get my foot in the door, but i have yet to hear back from them. on a completely different subject, i have grown tired of ati's software. i've had my ati all-in-wonder throughout my entire college career and i'm totally convinced that the card rocks. while ati seems to be on top of the hardware game, they are sorely lacking in software. the tv tuner software is extremely flaky, as is the gemstar guide+ scheduling software that came with it. both have all sorts of annoying idiosyncracies. last night something about the software became corrupt causing both tv and guide+ to crash on launch. upon uninstalling all of it and reinstalling the newest versions of everything, i found that the newer software was actually more buggy than the original. so again i am uninstalling all of the ati software. i think i've found a free tv replacement. i hope it works. post a comment | view comments (0) |

last week was spring break. i just went home for most of the week, but friday night i went with adam and kyle simon up to madison to go to peter's st. patrick's day party. saturday we went to an irish pub with some of peter's friends for lunch. the service sucked even though we were there during an off period between lunch and supper. we left a $2.56 tip on a $130 bill. the party was later that night and was quite enjoyable. we came back sunday. this week, so far, has been pretty great. i had a japanese oral exam on monday, which meant that i didn't have japanese on tuesday or today. *awesome* i had a night exam in mythology tonight, which means that i didn't have mythology this morning. all of this means that i didn't have any morning classes both yesterday and today. *super awesome* also, i got an a on the presentation i gave in my grad class on tuesday. *the awesomeness does not cease* well, until tomorrow, that is. tomorrow i start back into my normal routine. *sigh* six more weeks until i'm done. i do have a job interview tomorrow. and it's a phone interview, so i can do it in my underwear. i guess that's kind of awesome. post a comment | view comments (0) |

i got everything prepared for and sent in my lifetime handgun permit application today. my old permit expired in november and now that indiana grants lifetime permits, i decided to get one of those. why deal with the hassle of renewing every few years, especially when the state police take so long to process applications? the fingerprinting process was much lengthier this time than the last time i applied. also, the actual sheriff of howard county, not a deputy or other flunky, fingerprinted me and he was super anal about it. gots to make sure those fingerprints come out well.

i neglected to make an update on the status of my tb test. it was negative. they said that i need to get the test done again in april to make sure. i don't think that i'm going to try to graduate in may. i think it's probably better if i just plan on graduating in august. i've applied to be an oa (kind of like an ra) this summer so i have my housing and summer school paid for. i should hear if i got the job sometime this week. i've also been sending out resumes for real jobs like crazy. i've had a few bites, but they've all been from recruiting agencies, and i'm not totally sure if i want to go that route. for some reason, even the well-known and legit agencies seem shady to me. post a comment | view comments (0) |

in the eighth grade i was diagnosed with a case of latent tuberculosis by way of a seemingly random school-wide tb screening using a skin-prick test. the diagnosis was confirmed with a chest x-ray. we were never really able to fully determine where i came in contact with active tuberculosis, but after six months of treatment (which, oddly, required that i not eat cheese) i was given a clean bill of health and sent on my way. six years later while i was at vincennes, an ra i worked with was diagnosed with full-blown active tuberculosis. this prompted the university to offer free tb testing to anyone on campus. because of my earlier infection, i will always test positive for tb in skin-prick tests because they test merely for the antibody, which i will now have for the rest of my life. this meant that i had to go to a near-by clinic for a chest x-ray. the x-ray came up negative, the sick kid was sent to the hospital, and life went back to normal... until today. i got a letter in the mail today from the tippecanoe county health department informing me that i might have been exposed to a person with an active, infectious case of tb in one of my classes. wonderful. it goes on to say that i need to go to the student health center to be tested. joy. is it just me, or does there seem to be a lot of tb around me? i didn't think that tuberculosis was that common, but maybe i'm wrong and it's actually pretty common. or, tuberculosis follows me everywhere i go. yeah, i think that's it. post a comment | view comments (0) |

i turned down the job offer from that company in lafayette today. the pay would have sucked and it was a job doing tech support, which sucks. i really don't want any job where the only reason i'm there is to fix other people's problems; to fight fires. sure, that's going to be a part of pretty much any information technology-type job, but i want to be able to be somewhat creative, too. there is a big difference between coming up with innovative solutions that address business problems and helping someone figure out how to set up their email client.

the most interesting thing just happened. so i'm sitting in my 9:30 class, comparative mythology, and the teacher is telling the story of a sumerian myth. all of a sudden, everything goes dark. we sit a few seconds in the dark waiting for the power to come back, but nothing happens. so, the teacher continues telling us the story despite the fact that the only light in the room comes from the emergency light and a few scattered people's laptops. soon the distinct smell of smoke starts filling the room. at this point, the teacher decides that it's probably a good idea to end class. and because japanese was canceled, too, i'm now back in my room happy that the power didn't fail in cary.

yesterday was a pretty good day. after class, i went to a job interview for this little outsourced tech support company in lafayette. i had met the owners through a mutual friend a few weeks ago. i think the interview went well enough, though in retrospect there are some things i would have changed. they said they'd let me know around friday. after the interview, fellow ra and pilot robert took me up in a plane. we flew two patterns around klaf. i'd never been up in a small plane at night before, so that was cool. robert even let me drive a little. yay! after that, i met with some crs and kelly to watch the state of the union. the speech was boring, but i really don't think too many people were paying attention to it, anyway.

i'm taking this sociology class, "social problems". it pretty much sucks. having libertarian leanings, i tend not to believe that society has problems, but that people have problems and that these problems can be overcome by people without society's (the government's) help. so from the get-go, i already disagree with the entire premise of the class. great way to start, eh?

i've been trying to put together a more professional resume than what is already on this website in anticipation of eventually graduating. after consulting a good number of resume writing guides, writing the resume, and then passing a copy around to various people for review, i've determined that there are few absolutes when it comes to writing a resume. i get so much conflicting advice it seems that everyone is looking for something slightly different than everyone else.

i'm back at school again, hopefully for my last semester. second semester ra training starts in half an hour and classes start on monday. in other news, i'll be taking down the webcam page here soon. i think my webcam crapped out on me because all it shows now is green. it's actually been doing this for a while now, i just have been too lazy to do anything about it. i suppose that i'll eventually get a new webcam, but it won't be terribly soon.

last week was a bear. i had two tests and two presentations. i was so exhausted by friday that i went to sleep pretty early, despite it being my night off duty. today i used the wccr press pass to watch the purdue/iu game. the first half was so bad it was funny. neither team played well. the second half was much better and purdue ended up winning.

friday night ron white came to purdue, so jon and i went to see him. saturday i almost went flying to get some pictures for my photography project, but the plane had a dead battery and wouldn't start. i ended up going home saturday evening. yesterday i spent 7 hours or so in the photo lab getting prints made for tomorrow. we switched to a new type of paper that is supposed to be better, but takes at least twice as long to process.

ok, one more post for today. the army had a couple of attack dogs out on memorial mall today for demonstrations. they let me put on the dog jacket and get tackled by one. i got mud on my pants, but it was fun. after all of that, i went to the local camera shop to see if they rent lenses. they don't, but they had a used 135mm telephoto lens for my camera with a uv filter and shade cup thingy for only $30. so i bought that. i spent the rest of the afternoon at the airport taking pictures of planes taking off and landing with my new (to me) lens. i'm super psyched about what i'll be able to do with this lens; probably more than i should be. oh, well.

so, a guy i was an ra with at vincennes got arrested last week for some pretty big stuff. i'm not going to give too many details, but let's just say that it's made the news in a pretty big town. it's been pretty strange seeing his mugshot everywhere and hearing all of the stories about what he did. one positive of this is that it was the reason i got to talk with hope, another ra i used to work with, today for about an hour. we rarely talk, but when we do we always end up resolving to talk to each other more often. i'm not sure why it never happens to work out. no matter, it was great getting to catch up with an old friend, though it kind of sucks that it took something like this to make it happen.

i just got back from the purdue football game. it was the second game, and first home game, that i've been to since i started at purdue. that's kind of sad. i didn't buy tickets this year, so the only reason i got to go was because wccr has a press pass and, as of yet, no sports show. being the former president of wccr, i made an executive decision that i should go. so, i got to watch the game from the comfort of the press box while enjoying free food and drinks. you'd better believe i took pictures.

labor day weekend was ok. saturday we had to put in hay, but it was so wet that we kept getting the truck and trailer stuck in the pasture. my allergies have been so bad here lately that aside from driving the truck, i tried to stay as far away from the hay as possible. i rode josh for the first time in many, many years. while it was very not good for the allergies, it was fun. i rode bareback, so my inner thighs were pretty sore for some time afterwards. luckily, there was enough sun out so i could take pictures. i didn't get two whole rolls exposed, but i got at least one done. due to no class yesterday, we didn't have chem lab this morning at 7:30. yay for that. ok, that's it.

i am exhausted. yesterday was the last day in a week-and-a-half ra training program. while training was a lot of very long hours, it wasn't all work and no play. one day all of the cary ras got to go out to camp tecumseh to participate in a wilderness emergency rescue course. the idea of the course wasn't to teach us how to evacuate an incapacitated person from a wilderness area, but to get us to come together as a team and to teach us to work together. another day we got to go around in small groups through the halls while returning ras provided mock policy violations for us to handle. yesterday, as the final event in our training, we attended a large, formal banquet in the union with a lot of university and university residences big-shots, including president jischke. general move-in started today and will extend until sunday evening. class starts bright and early at 9:30am on monday morning. i'm really looking forward to something more of a routine.

friday i took the truck and trailer to help kelly and jason move. on the way back the trailer got a flat tire. it took an hour to change it. saturday i went to bloomington to hang out with chris anderson and his fiancée. we had indian (dots, not feathers) for supper. i ordered a dish that was labeled "hot", because that usually doesn't mean anything in indiana. yeah, that was a mistake. afterwards we played putt-putt, and i lost for the second time in a week.

jake and i got back from our trip yesterday evening. it was mostly quite fun, but also very tiring. because i was able to leave as early as i wanted, i was able to take a detour through vincennes on my way to washington. we walked around the tech building looking for people i know, but found no one. after that, we walked around and scoped out the new buildings on campus: the rec center and the performing arts center. i have no idea why either of those buildings were necessary, but they sure are pretty. i also took jake through vigo hall to show him where i worked as an ra. after a quick driving tour of the town, we finally continued on to washington. we got there an hour earlier than we planned. apparently washington is on central time. i was under the impression that only the evansville area was. oh, well. we had a nice visit with aunt bonnie and uncle jim. we had supper with them and then went to play miniature golf. i lost. tuesday morning we headed out for holiday world. i've got to say, that place is really nice. it was clean, smoke-free, and had unlimited free soft drinks. they didn't have a whole lot of roller coasters or other "big kid" rides, but the ones that they did have were pretty decent. they also had a show about competitive diving where they had some crazy lady set herself on fire and jump into a pool, and some crazy guy do a dive off of a 70 ft. platform. i guess we were there for about five hours. the drive from holiday world to our grandmother's was quite nice, as well. for the most part, we were on i-64 which runs through the hoosier national forest. it really is a very pretty area. wednesday morning grandmom had arranged for a pilot to take the three of us up in a small plane for 10 to 15 minutes. that was fun. i haven't been in a small plane in a very long time. it reminded me that i need to get my pilot's license. when we got back to her house, we did some yard work for her and left. we stopped at the outlet mall in edinburgh on the way back to do some back-to-school shopping and just general browsing. the drive back kind of sucked. traffic wasn't bad, but it wasn't very good and it was just too humid out to be comfortable. post a comment | view comments (6) |

today i helped dad clean the barn. yuck. after supper i made peach daiquiris. they were glorious. monday jake and i start our tour of southern indiana. our first scheduled stop is in washington, indiana, to visit our aunt and uncle, but i think i might swing through vincennes first. it's not far from washington and i'd really like to see all of the changes. jake won't read this post, so he won't know what's going on until he sees the "welcome to vincennes" signs on the highway. tuesday morning we'll be leaving washington for santa claus, indiana, to spend the day at holiday world theme park. after a day of riding roller coasters we'll continue on to hanover, indiana, to visit with our grandmother. the final leg of the trip will be back to russiaville on wednesday afternoon.

as you could probably have guessed by my last post, adam and i went up to madison for the weekend. friday mrs. rusch drove us up to merrillville. from there we took a coach bus up to o'hare in chicago where we changed buses. the next leg was to janesville, wisconsin. in janesville, we met adam's grandmother and then proceeded to her house. we were to meet a friend of adam's family so adam could buy a car from him. after that transaction was complete, we hopped in adam's new 1994 chevy caprice and completed our last leg of our trip to madison. we had a good visit with peter. he had a party saturday night and that was fun. we ended up leaving madison at around 5pm cdt yesterday and got back just short of midnight edt.

last tuesday was independence day, so fireworks were bought and shot off monday and tuesday night. we still have a good number of bottle rockets and firecrackers left over, so we still shoot some of those off every once-in-a-while. this year's fireworks were pretty amazing. this was the first year in a very, very long time that anything other than fountains and sparklers were legal in the state of indiana. so while in the past only a few daring people would use mortars and other shoot-in-the-air-type fireworks, it seemed that this year everyone in the country got in on the action. wednesday i went to west lafayette to get a few things for the radio station. i had to be there at 8:30am and the task didn't take that long, so i ended up with nothing to do for pretty much the whole day. after adam got out of class i hung out with him and matt for a while, but while i was waiting for him i decided to take a walk around the almost-complete second floor of cary quad southeast, the area in which i'll be working come august. southeast is in the last stages of a renovation project that had it closed all last year. from what i could tell, it was very close to being finished, with only a few cosmetic things left to do. i walked around trying to find out which room was the ra room, but found that there are, in fact, three ra rooms, so i couldn't figure out which was to be mine. friday afternoon i had to go back to west lafayette for a planning weekend for the newspaper. that evening we had a cookout at adam's place and pretty much just chilled there. saturday we met with a guy who helped us figure out what we need to do to get established a little better, make a lot more money, and generally be effective. it appears that i'm going to be the director in charge of our web presence. "new media director". that'll look good on the old resume. post a comment | view comments (0) |

this week has (surprisingly) been kind of busy. monday and tuesday i was in indy for the indiana republican state convention. i worked as a poll clerk, which meant i did nothing because there wasn't anything to vote on. using some black magic, matt plomin got our normal hotel room in the omni severin upgraded to a two-story suite on the 12th floor for $50 more. pictures of the room and its awesome view are in the photo gallery. thursday i had to go to lafayette for a business meeting, so naturally that turned into a trip to the cactus. yesterday i went to teri erk and dave sutton's wedding and reception. the service was elegant but short, so that was nice.

i went to the greater lafayette area tonight for adam's 24th birthday. i met him at his house and we hung out for an hour or so. then we met chase, jeff, and matt and went to la scala for supper. after that we picked up some cigars (the nice ones) and headed to eight west (at the top of the holiday inn) for after-dinner drinks and cigars. while there, matt struck up conversation with some people from a pharmaceutical consortium, most notably hedinn (from iceland) and shawn (from england). after a couple of hours we decided to move on to chumley's because they have a great selection of beer (50 on tap, 100 in bottles). chase and jeff wimped out on us and went home after dropping us off at chumley's. there we met matt's coworker, cajun (he is german and i don't know how to pronounce or spell his real name, so we all called him cajun, which is close). hedinn also met us there after finally breaking free from his pharmaceutical associates. it was one of the most fun nights i've had in years.

news, news, news... i never got a letter telling me if i got an ra job or not. i finally got fed up and called the housing office. they said that me not getting a letter was an "oversight" and that i should get one "tomorrow". this was last wednesday. they also told me that i was placed on the alternates list. so basically, i still don't know if i have a job or not. as part of a study i volunteered for, i was tested for adhd. guess what. i've got it. i must say, it's really no surprise to me. i'm just glad that finally someone other than me recognizes it. as part of the study i get free treatment for 20 days. i start tomorrow. wish me luck.

i got back from spring break yesterday. i wanted to get in a bit early so i could catch some of the first boilermaker regional. i really didn't do a lot over break; just chillin' for the most part. i still haven't heard anything about my ra job due to some office mix-up. i was supposed to get a letter informing me of their decision the week before spring break, but i didn't get anything. i let it be known that i hadn't received anything and they said that they'd look into it. maybe i'll get something this week.

i updated my public yahoo calendar for the first time in a very long time. i sort of lost the program that exports my outlook/palm calendar to yahoo when i had to reformat in august. i just found the program again today. speaking of palm, i got my super-duper hybrid stereo headset for my treo today. now i can listen to mp3s in full stereo splendor from my phone! wow! i've spent most of the evening in the studio looking through old records. i have to dj a dance at an old-folks home tomorrow night so i thought i'd better go find some old music. man, if we could sell some of those old, old records we'd be rich.

i did the ra carousel thing last night. i thought it went really well. they say that they'll tell us if we got hired or not by spring break. i surely hope i get it. my car is getting worse. i think that i'll be taking it to the shop sometime in the next few weeks. i'm sure that's not going to be cheap. it sucks being poor. i think i'm going to apply at best buy over spring break for a summer job. it won't pay well as well as i'm used to, but something's better than nothing.

i think the clutch in my car is dying. i have to say a prayer, cross my eyes, and sacrifice a small rabbit to the clutch gods in order to get the sucker into either first, second, or reverse. third isn't too bad, but it's still not as easy as it used to be. i think the problem is that no matter how far i press down on the clutch, it never fully disengages whatever it's supposed to disengage. i don't know why my clutch keeps dying. it seems to happen every few years. it's not like i ride the clutch or try to burn my tires all that much. in fact, i haven't tried to spin my tires but maybe once or twice since i last had my clutch worked on.

adam and i just got back from a visit to peter in wisconsin. good times were had by all. we got into the purdue-wisconsin game for $5 each. not too bad. our frugal fun streak ended there, though. 8 people racked up a $316 bill (including tip) at the essen-haus in madison. it was kind of pricey, but we were there for almost three hours and it was quite a bit of fun, so it was worth it. you don't get to do that kind of thing everyday.

provided that the check i was given doesn't bounce, i have now been compensated for my car. that's nice. i think the main hard drive in joebob is going bad now. i had a little bit of a heat issue here recently and i don't think the drive appreciated it. so now windows won't boot. hopefully a file just got corrupt and the drive isn't bad. i suppose that keeping a windows installation running on a desktop for 2.5 years (installed 01/30/2003) isn't bad, though.

so i'm back from spring break. while not too exciting, it was a welcomed break from the daily grind. i went to st. louis for the last weekend of it for a seminar. st. louis has to be the most boring big city ever. don't go. on the other hand, our hotel room had an excellent view of the gateway arch, which was half a block away.

i got a "we regret to inform you..." letter about the ra job yesterday. i guess they had somewhere around 100 people apply for 12 spots. the letter said that they could still end up calling me sometime over break and that my application would carry over to next semester, too, so i'm not totally shot down. i still don't know how i'm going to continue paying for school. i'd really like to be able to take care of it myself, but that doesn't look like it's going to happen right now. in other news, my calc and programming finals sucked. i'm not expecting very good grades in those classes. i had my psych final tonight and that went pretty well, so that's good. i've got nothing until my jap final on saturday. yay for break! post a comment | view comments (0) |

today and tomorrow is october break at purdue, so i don't have school. on the way home friday i got in a wreck and messed up the front of the wagon. there is a chance that the wagon is dead for good. no matter, i already had plans (and, more importantly, tickets) to see ron white (of blue collar comedy tour fame) in indy friday night. so, jon picked me up and we went down. ron was very funny. saturday morning adam and i drove up to madison, wisconsin for peter's 21st b-day. We got back late sunday night. now i have to go back to lafayette to get stuff out of my car and see about getting it fixed. tomorrow i think i'm going to stop by the old office and see how everyone is doing there. i might waste some ammo at the range, too.

Christmas wasn't too bad, except for the 12 or so hours of overtime i ended up putting in over the break. most notably i got a new wallet. i needed a new wallet badly. my old one was falling apart. this next paycheck will be nice. it'll give me something to fill my wallet with.

i had quite the long weekend. it started thursday after work. i picked up jon and went to vincennes. friday we went to the university to do a couple of favors for our former professor mr. brown. we also got to see and talk to a few old friends and other professors, so it was nice. saturday we stopped by the lan party that was going on, and then we left for home. sunday i went to winamac with two of my coworkers and shot at the dnr range there. my ak-47 broke. :-( it's nothing too big, though, and shouldn't be hard to fix. later that evening i went to see an acapella group perform. it was more fun than i thought it was going to be. after that i came home, talked to some friends and went to bed way too late.

watch out vincennes! it looks like i have some business to take care of at my alma mater. my plans currently have me getting there late thursday evening and leaving saturday at around noon. if you want to see me or do something with me during my visit drop me a line or something. if you'd rather develop pancreatic cancer than see me, you've been warned. i highly doubt that is the case; however. after all, you are reading my website, aren't you?

friday night i went to purdue to party with adam and tony and the gang. one highlight was that we went and saw the matrix revolutions. very good, i thought. leaves too much unanswered in the end, though. saturday nothing happened. today i got to give my ak-47 a good test run. put about 50 rounds into a pumpkin with it. :-) nice.

i finally got my internet access hooked-up in my room. boy, was that a pain. i changed the layout of the news so that the newest stuff is at the top. also, i added a simple random wep key maker to the downloads page.

i'll be going back to school tomorrow. i don't think i've paid for internet access yet, so i may be unavailable by internet-based means.

this site is best viewed in at least 256 colors. also, anything less than 1024x768 resolution makes the site look crappy. © 2003 - 2009 kristoffer knigga | view this page's source! |
